Flower Arrangements in St Peter 's Church, Willersey

I have been asked to write a few lines about the flowers that adorn our lovely Church throughout the year (except during Lent and Advent) – and how they get there.
We are a group of volunteers mainly of women – plus a couple of men! We take it in turns to make sure there are fresh flowers placed on the cupboard behind the altar for all to enjoy. After having been part of the flower committee for about 16 years, I was asked last year to take over the running of it. Among other things this means making up the rota: we do two weeks at a time which, with our current group works out at doing the flowers once, maybe twice a year. For the special Church Festivals i.e. Christmas, Easter, the Patronal Festival and Harvest when the whole Church is decorated, we do the work together.
For the Patronal Festival the Village Organisations “take over” and produce the most amazing displays! Before each festival we come together to discuss ideas, colours, which flowers are to be used and to decide who does what ie. which part of the Church each of us will be responsible for. Decorating the Church for these special occasions can take quite a few hours – not to mention the clearing up afterwards but it is fun and rewarding.
Because of the constant temperature in the Church the flowers can last from 1 to 3 weeks, provided they are kept well-watered, so keeping an eye on them is important. Willersey is very lucky to have such a beautiful Church and it is a joy to decorate it with flowers. We hope that you will come in and have a look sometime! T.O.
